NEW WEIGHT restrictions could cause problems for operators hauling vital loads to remote communities on the Scottish island of Mull, the local council admitted this week.
Argyll and Bute Council is changing its weight restriction to conform with national regulations. At present weight restrictions on the island are based on laden weight but by the end of this year this will be changed to the plated weight. Many of the island's roads have a 12-tonne weight limit.
Under the present system vehicles with plated weights of more than 12 tonnes can be used to carry larger loads as long as the 12-tonne laden weight is not exceeded. Under the new system the plated weight will be the relevant factor — excluding bigger trucks from many of the island's roads.
A council spokesman says it is considering exemptions for particular loads. However, the council supports the change because it is easier to police weight restrictions based on plated weights with no need to weigh suspect vehicles.
