THE EU'S COUNCIL of transport ministers has agreed contr versial Irish amendments to t e drivers' hours rules that me n drivers will only be allowed o work on alternate weekends.
Changes to the hours rules ha e been stalled in the European Co mission for three years; this was attempt by the Irish governme t, which holds the EU presidency, o break the deadlock. However the Freight Transport Association is aggrieved that the UK government did not move o block the Irish legislation, inste d preferring to trade off its vote return for support on other issu The FTA's EU affairs manager, Damian Viccars, warns that the UK government also failed to support attempts to harmonise driving bans across the Continent which would have enabled better journey plan
ning. Instead it sided with a small group including France, Germany and Austria to ensure support for a separate deal in order that hauliers can get tax rebates to offset the cost of road user charging.
