IF THE Bus and Coach Council's efforts to ensure that the new speed limits are not obeyed, the Government will consider stiffer action "at the end of the year", Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley told MPs during last week's debate which approved the new regulations.
Mr Ridley said that if they found they had made a mistake in their assessment of the impact of higher speeds on accidents, then MPs would want to reconsider the new limits.
But Mr Ridley met with stiff opposition to his proposals, with no MP giving an unqualified welcome to the proposals, although only one Tory MP, Robert Adley, voted against the Government.
Mr Adley said he had never heard anyone claim that more speed meant more safety, "I do not see how it is possible to claim that a fast coach going faster is safer for other road users."
