THE MILITARY all-wheel-drive version of the lveco Daily, the 40 PM 10 4x4 vehicle with a payload of 1,500kg (29.5cwt), has become the first application of the new Fiat-Sofim direct injection diesel engine which was first shown at Frankfurt, and more recently at Geneva a civil version is expected to become available later this year.
In the military application of the new engine, output ratings are slightly higher than those announced at Frankfurt.
The four cylinder engine, with a displacement of 2.45 litres (bore and stroke dimensions 95x9Omm), is turbocharged by either a KKK-K 26 or Garrett T3 unit fitted with a variable wastegate for regulating turbocharger pressure.
The engine, still the smallest automotive diesel using the direct injection principle (though not for much longer), is claimed to return a fuel consumption 15 per cent lower than the existing pre-combustion Sofim engine from which it was derived.
Transmission options in the 4x4 Daily operating at a gvw of 4,000kg (79cwt) include the ZF 3HP automatic and a manual gearbox which allows slightly faster acceleration.
