• A police check of 30 vehicles on the M6 at Perry Barr last week has resulted in half the vehicles-14—being issued with delayed or immediate prohibition notices.
In the most serious case, inspection of a trailer revealed the suspension on the front axle to be almost adrift of the chassis while the parking brake was discovered to have been broken for some considerable time.
The faults were uncovered after the vehicle and trailer were involved in an accident but this could not have been responsible for the damage, say police.
While prosecutions are likely in this case, West Midlands Police operate a system of warnings to drivers where defects are not found to be serious and can be easily rectified.
Police say the number of prohibitions issued on this occasion is not an unusual tally for vehicles checked. On average, more than half the vehicles stopped at Perry Barr have defects. The check was part of a regular series carried out at a vehicle compound.
