Tread with interest the larticle published in the issue of 24 February on Balfour Beatty regarding its operations on the second Severn Bridge Crossing.
On reading the article you could not blame the casual observer for forming the opinion that a large proportion of the tipper vehicles in the Bristol area are being operated illegally. I therefore feel the need to redress the balance and make the following observations.
When the particular job in question started, most of the local hauliers felt that the rates being offered were not sufficient for them to operate profitably, so large numbers of vehicles were brought in from various parts of the country. In my experience, despite the appallingly low rates being offered in the area, most operators strive to run legally.
