• The Department of Transport is understood to have made a U-turn on the way in which continuous licensing is now to be introduced.
The switch from five-year to continuous licences planned to take place by July 1995 was originally expected to happen overnight.
However, the DOT is now planning to introduce continuous licensing over five years. This is broadly welcomed by the Licensing Authorities because it will give residents a final chance to object to operators' licensing requests as the operators will have to advertise their requirements one last time.
