• Before long more than half the trucks moving goods into and out of the UK will be foreign-registered.
According to the latest figures from the Department of Transport the number of foreign vehicles leaving the UK rose from 39% to a record 43% last year, a five-year trend. Assuming that this trend continues, the number of foreign trucks entering the UK will be in the majority sometime next year.
The trend towards more accompanied HU traffic between the UK and Europe also continued last year. During 2000 the number of trucks and trailers crossing the Channel rose from 2.24 million to 2.39m. But while the number of powered vehicles increased by 11%, the number of unaccompanied trailers crossing to Europe fell by 1%. Lone trailers accounted for 33% of all vehicle traffic leaving ports in 2000.
