PROPOSALS TO retrofit trucks with blind-spot mirrors have received the support of MEPs.
An EU Directive requires new trucks to be fitted with blind-spot mirrors from 2007, but the European Parliament says the continent's five million LGVs would not be entirely replaced until 2023.
The European Commission proposed retrofitting mirrors to all trucks registered after January 2000. MEPs have voted in favour of this proposal, leaving the route clear for individual countries to decide whether to include this move In their domestic legislation.
A statement from the European Parliament says: "MEPs do not anticipate any practical problem in retrofitting lorries registered since 2000. The estimated cost would be €100-150 (£70-100) per vehicle, ie the cost of one stop at a petrol station, but this measure could save up to 1,200 lives in Europe by 2020. Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark already have national retrofitting schemes."
The UK Department for Transport is carrying out a consultation into the industry's acceptance of retrofitting.
A Road Haulage Association spokesman says it has responded by supporting safety measures such as removing blind spots, but warns it could be costly and suggests operators are given financial help to pay for the extra mirrors.
