OWNER-DRIVER Derek Whippen has worked in London all his life. He says: bought a Euro-2 vehicle three years ago and thought it would last me until my retirement. It cost £30,000 but now is only worth £13,500. Buying a Euro-3 will cost me 252,000— so the money I'll be earning will just be paying for the lorry and not preparing for my retirement. It's a problem many people my age will have."
