UPTO 60 DRIVERS' jobs are at risk because of Dairy Crest plans to close its plant in Totnes,Devon. In total more than 200 jobs are at risk, according to the Transport & General Workers Union section of the new 'super union' Unite.
Dave Springbett, regional industrial organiser at the T&G section of Unite, explains:"Dairy Crest is saying it's not feasible to expand the site and it is blaming high costs, but we feel this is one of the most efficient plants within Dairy Crest."
A Dairy Crest spokesman explains that the firm is considering the closure of the Totnes site as the result of a strategic review: "We will immediately start a 90-day consultation period with employees and the unions."
Springbett promises that Unite will not let the closure go unchallenged. He says: "The milk will still be produced in the area,so it doesn't make sense to transport it to a plant in Gloucestershire for bottling — particularly when everyone is so concerned about food miles."
