Tunnel thoughts
AN ESSEX surveyor has sent details to Essex county authorities for a north south road link direct from and to Southend-on-Sea. The route, by bridge over the River Roach, and then tunnel under the River Crouch, is receiving considerable interest in several of the areas involved.
Surveyor Ron Burrell claims that a north/south tunnel would be an escape route from any disaster at the Bradwell nuclear power station. More realistically, it would provide a welcome link from South East Essex to Burnham, Maldon and South Woodham.
The proposed new route would also link with the Al2 at Witham.
One council official, commenting on the idea, said: "It could be a very costly business, but, of course, the county highways committee is always ready to consider and evaluate all suggestions." GORDON WAGSTAFF Southend-on-Sea
