INTER-ISLAND ferries in the Western Isles will continue to have their fares subsidised following a decision made by Western Isles Council last week.
'there had been concerns that the ferry subsidy was on the verge of being axed after the scheme had been in operation for three years.
A rise in fares would have resulted in a 40% increase in fares for trucks and large vans between Harris and North Uist, and between Barra and Eriskay.
The subsidy for the ferries has now been guaranteed until the end of this financial year and will cost the council £50,000.
Council leader Angus Campbell, who announced the funding decision, said: "We all recognise the importance of the inter-island scheme, and, in this case, the benefits outweigh the risk."
