• A plan to build a 200-lorry truckstop off the M1 at East Midlands Airport has been rejected by the local council on orders from the Department of Transport.
But the farmer behind the plan is keen to talk to the DTp in an attempt to come up with a compromise.
North West Leicestershire District Council rejected the planning application for the site, which would have included a 24-bedroom motel and a DTp-run weighbridge, after consultations with the DTp.
The truckstop, proposed for a site on the roundabout at the new J23A of the Ml, would have spoiled the countryside and hampered traffic flow, says the council's deputy chief planning officer Erica Morris.
But the applicant's agent, Tony Krarup, says there is a demand for a truckstop in the area: "There is another small truckstop at junction 23, but it is full with lorries every night," he says.
