A RE some passengers using Newport I-1 Corporation buses being overcharged?. In June the South Wales Traffic Commissioners granted fares of 3d. up to 0.7 of a mile and 31d. between 0.7 and one mile. But Newport Corporation are charging 4d. for the latter. This intricate situation put to the Commissioners, elicited the reply that there had clearly been a misunderstanding about the question of a 31d. fare. The increase had not been granted. Mr. R. A. Hawkins, general manager of the corporation undertaking, declined to comment on the situation but an official of the Newport town clerk's department, said: "It was understood that the 4d. fare had been granted. When the Commissioners were talking of keeping the 3-1d, fare, it was thought that they were only giving their own advice and making their own observations. Until the matter is sorted out between the Commissioners and the corporation, on a date yet to be arranged, the 4d. fare will remain."
It is understood that officials of Newport Corporation are to meet the Traffic Commissioners this week.
