STRIKE ACTION at Ansa Logistics has been suspended for four days pending talks with the Transport & General Workers' Union.
About 75% of the 370 workers were expected to walk out again last Monday (CM 15 August) following a fortnight of action, but the strike was halted after the company promised that any redundancies would be voluntary.
A T&G spokeswoman says: "The union has agreed to suspend action to allow talks to take place. However, the union has the right to resume action."
Ansa, which delivers for Ford and Jaguar, has been accused of 60 compulsory redundancies and imposing a pay cut despite guaranteeing job security two years ago when the current contract began. Ansa claims the dispute is over "restrictive" practices rather than wages (CM 11 August).
• Bosses at catering firm Gate Gourmet have beer accused of provoking the strike which grounded British Airways so they could sack staff. and replace them with cheap labour.
A leaked report in the Daily Mirror reveals the company launched a new firm, Versa Logistics, to counter the threat of wildcat action and take on lower paid Polish drivers. Gate Gourmet says the document seen by the Mirror was drafted as a proposal by managers who are no longer with the company.
