• Fines of up to 25,000 and two years' imprisonment face fleet and leasing company operators if they foil to take notice of the new statutory off-road notification (SORN) procedures in force on 31 January 1998.
The new procedures, warns the DVLA, require operators to declare SORN if they keep vehicles off the road untaxed.
As a result, any leasing company which takes a taxed vehicle back from a customer, obtains a refund but keeps the vehicle off the road waiting for disposal, must be careful. If it fails to declare SORN while applying for a refund, and yet remains the registered keeper, it will be fined £1,000.
Operators with queries on the new procedures can contact Rob Watts on 01792 782548 or a relevant trade association.
