P&O takes issue with the French
P&O has become so frustrated by French blockades that it made two sailings with just three hauliers on each vessel last week to launch a formal legal challenge to the SeaFrance workers' strike.
"This was a secondary action. They were within their rights to stop SeaFrance sailings, but not ours,'' says P&O spokesman Brian Rees. "We made a formal attempt to berth the Pride of Aquitaine and were greeted by 200 half-pissed strikers chucking luggage trolleys and whatever they could lay their hands on into the berth. After that we went to a French court and obtained an injunction to stop their action against us."
Rees acknowledges that this injunction was unlikely to be enforced because the action only lasted 24 hours, but its purpose was to establish a principle. He says: 'We now intend to pursue the strikers for compensation. The process will take between four and eight years in the French courts, but we are determined to carry it through.We need to let hauliers know that we are doing something about this."
