By Roanna Avison THE 2009 EUROPEAN Road Transport Show (ERTS) at the RAI in Amsterdam has been cancelled following the decision of all the major truck manufacturers to pull out.
Daf had already made known its intentions not to have a presence at RAI in 2009, but a spokeswoman for the show says: "After discussions with all the truck manufacturers we decided that because of the economic conditions we would not hold the European Road Transport Show in 2009."
She adds that smaller light CV producers and manufacturers of specialist products were also consulted and agreed with the decision to cancel the event, which was scheduled for autumn 2009.
The organisers expect the next show, in 2011, to go ahead.
Tony Pain, marketing director at Daf, says: "As with all manufacturers we reviewed the state of the market we expect for next year, and given the current economic conditions it's looking pretty grim in terms of requirements for vehicles."
He adds that Daf is cutting back costs and cannot justify the enormous expense of a trade show such as RAI when staff are being laid off on the production line.
-The biggest problem for the manufacturers is the speed at which the downturn has happened. Only a few months ago things were looking quite good, but now it would be irresponsible to spend a lot of money on a truck show when we are looking at our operating costs."
