"Our capacity management product offers Volvo-trained drivers as part of a package, which is good for the customer because it guarantees a standard, will give better fuel consumption and means not having to deal with driver agencies.
"It's designed to reflect customers' seasonal work patterns. You can take a core fleet of men and trucks and flex it depending on different volumes and demand. But we are not going to be a driver agency and provide drivers by themselves and certainly not on one-day spot hire."
"There is a dearth of drivers," Barrie Cload says. "There is significant potential to provide a better total cost to customers with a higher level of quality than they get already. The driver will be recognised as having a skill and start being rewarded for it. He can start being a human being again rather than a commodity an asset rather than a liability.
"Total cost will come down if we aim to get a better overall performance by paying more for drivers but expecting more for it. At the moment there are people driving hundreds of miles with thousands of pounds worth of load and getting paid for zero responsibility."
