Many moons have passed since the Hawk, as a mere fledgling reporter, was shown the ropes. He can still remember his first day, the nerves and anticipation as he stood on the threshold of what was to become his lifelong work.
Seventeen-year-oid lain Livingstone, pictured here with Rentokil Ailsa's fleet manager, Ralph Roberts, must have experienced similar butterflies on his first day with the Paisleybased company, as an apprentice HGV engineer, lain is the first apprentice the firm has taken on for 16 years. He will follow a Modern Apprenticeship which will lead to a City and Guilds qualification in HGV engineering. The training is being funded by the Skillseekers programme available through Renfrewshire Enterprise.
Ralph Roberts is wholehearted in his support for the scheme: "The level of training for engineers in the road transport industry has declined markedly over the past 10 years and, as a result, there is a chronic shortage of skilled engineers.
We decided it was time to alleviate the problem and put something back into the industry."
Well said that man!
