christopher.walton(arhi.co.uk VOSA HAS ADMITTED it does not have permanent vehicle inspection facilities at the Port of Liverpool, after it emerged the agency was still barred from three other ports across the UK.
Last month, VOSA told the Committee of Public Accounts that it still remained barred from performing vehicle inspections at three ports across the country: Stranraer and Cairnryan in Scotland, which run services into Northern Ireland, as well as Twelve t Quays on the Wirral, which sails into Belfast and Dublin.
& At the time, it also revealed to the committee that it was barred from the Port of Liverpool, but a spokesman for Peel Ports — which operates the port — refuted this claim, saying VOSA was carrying out weekly operations on site.
The spokesman for Port of Liverpool says the operation had been in place for eight months. He adds: "VOSA carries out weekly joint operations with Port of Liverpool targeting unsafe HCiVs using the port, in a load-safe initiative aimed at reducing accidents. The results have shown a 66% reduction in accidents so far this year."
A spokeswoman for VOSA clarified the situation: "VOSA does not have permanent checking facilities at the Port of Liverpool for port operational reasons.
"However, we do carry out vehicle inspections alongside the port's police force to check the safety and roadworthiness of lorries moving through the port."
