• Eutotunnel's Le Shuttle service will be faster and more frequent this year, says the Channel Tunnel operator.
Eurotunnel freight director Christian Zbylut says there will be between three and four departures an hour, compared with two last year. Crossing time will remain at 35 minutes, but Eurotunnel aims to "cut the journey from motorway to
motorway from the M20 to the A16—down to 80 minutes, compared with 90 minutes today", says Zbylut. Waiting times would be reduced by modifying loading procedures and promoting the use of toll cards.
Le Shuttle claims a 47% market share on Dover-Calais HGV traffic, with a total of 390,922 trucks carried in 1995. A daily peak of 3,286 vehicles was reached on 29 November due to strikes at the port of Calais. This year Le Shuttle plans to
increase its HGV traffic by 50%.
E Food served on Le Shuttle is now prepared in Calais. "What drivers eat is extra-fresh," says Zbylut.
