on Wells and docks
by CM reporter MEMBERS of the Road Haulage Association were this week studying two questionnaires sent out with the current issue of Roadway. One concerns the proposed reorganisation of the Association following publication of a report •by Mr John Wells and the other concerns the Government plans for redefining dockwork.
The steering committee set up to study ways and means of implementing the proposals of Mr Wells was due to report back at the RHA council meeting on July 30. However, copies of the questionnaire, which aims to find out how many operators would apply for registration under the approved scheme, do not have to be returned until July 3L The questionnaire goes on to list the proposals put forward by Mr Wells—including the establishment of a register of approved hauliers. Membership of this body is likely to cost, says the questionnaire, about 50p per vehicle with a i.:10 minimum and a E100 maximum. Freight brokers would pay £20 a year.
First question is: "If it proved possible to establish the scheme, would you apply for registration as an 'approved' undertaking?" If the answer to this is yes, operators are asked which of the following services they would use: discounts on bulk purchases; assistance from the panel of advisers or computer-based accounting services.
The questionnaire about the dockwork proposals—to which the RHA is vehemently opposed--is to obtain information for use in fighting the Bill With which the Government will implement docks reform. Operators are asked to provide information about warehouses used which will be affected by the clockwork reorganisation proposals.
