• The RAC has teamed up with the British Standards Institution in what it calls "a bid to raise the standards of recovery firms". A code of practice has been drawn up as part of any application for BS5750 quality approval within the industry.
"The codes of practice are a first for an industry where no formal guidelines have ever been set down," says Frank Richardson, director for RAC Rescue Services. "Every motorist has the right to expect prompt help from a trained operator who will carry out disciplined safety and security procedures."
Firms will be visited by BSI inspectors who ensure that quality mechanisms are in place. Recovery contractors working for the RAC will be able to apply through a Quality Partnership Scheme to save time and money on their BS5750 applications.
As CM went to press, the Association of Vehicle Recovery Operators was discussing the Code with the RAC.
