THE PROPOSED ban by the GLC on vehicles over 40ft between 7.00pm and 7.00am is viewed with disquiet by the Metropolitan Police, according to Mr P. Kavanagh, Assistant Commissioner of Traffic. He told the National Guild of Transport Managers in London last week : "We have made this point to the GLC but our view has not prevailed."
Mr Kavanagh dwelt on the theme that law should be both simple and enforceable. He hoped that any scheme for designated lorry routes would be advisory and not mandatory. He said : "We felt that routes that are logical, economical and convenient would themselves produce compliance.
"Such routes would of course be dependent on new or much improved roads, but environmentalists are not prepared to wait."
Mr Kavanagh went on : "No one has to force drivers of heavy lorries going from London to South Wales to use the M4."
When bus lanes were introduced there were four different types of lane signs, 16 different times of operation, three definitions of a bus and variations in the permitted use of the lane by vehicles other than buses. "We hope to simplify the situation," he added.
