NORFOLK County Council's plan to ban vehicles over 3 tons from the centre of King's Lynn would cost £2.5m a year in extra costs, according to the Road Haulage Association.
The RHA says that the proposal would put an extra eight miles on a journey to the docks—a heavy penalty for heavy vehicles.
The plan could mean that the King's Lynn docks would become uneconomic to use.
"Instead of generating more work and thus increasing employment in the area, the proposed restriction would lead to a decrease in the volume of traffic and a decrease in the amount of employment available to residents," says the RHA, objecting to the proposal.
The existing route did not interfere in any way with the picturesque part of the town. More than 800 heavy vehicle journeys were made through the town each day.
The RHA objection will be heard at a public inquiry in King's Lynn on June 21.
