NEW BUS designs may soon emerge from Metro-Cammell Weymann—both with RollsRoyce engines. Mock-ups have been built of an updated MCW Olympic service bus design with an eye on export markets as well as home sales.
Specially developed for this is a new horizontal Rolls-Royce engine. The original Olympic Was an integral design built by MCW with Leyland running units. It was produced in the early 1950s for export although British operators including Ribble ran some examples.
A second design is a Mark II Metropolitan double decker, with the Scania engine replaced with a vertical Rolls-Royce Eagle diesel. It seems likely that the rest of the Metropolitan design will remain largely unchanged. Said an MCW spokesman : "It would be silly to throw away all the development work put into the original Metropolitan."
Rolls-Royce marketing director Mr George Reeves told CM that for several months the company had made great efforts to get into the psv field. The new horizontal engine had been built specifically for buses and other manufacturers besides MCW were interested in it.
