• New truck drivers could soon have to take a classroom test to establish their likely safety record—before being allowed in the cab.
Following research, the AA has developed a psychometric test that is claimed to root out those drivers who are most likely to break the traffic regulations or have an accident. Would-be drivers are asked to answer a series of multiplechoice questions which are said to reveal their hidden personality traits. Speaking at a conference on driver safety, Matthew Joint, the AA's head of behavioural analysis, said testing of the product on a sample of fleet drivers is in the final stages. It is likely to be made available to driver recruiters soon, but Joint declined to say when it will go on sale. Once in use it should be used to develop effective training. Also speaking at the conference was the Metropolitan Police's driving expert, Mike Lovelock, who wondered why so much more time is spent showing drivers how to use IT systems than on driver tuition and accident prevention. 3 Professor Jim Horne, Loughborough University's sleep expert, told the conference that he is opposed to in-cab devices that go off if the driver starts to fall asleep as some drivers would start to rely on them with potentially disastrous consequences.
