Speaking of the remarkable growth of the work of the East Midland traffic area, at the sixth annual staff dinner, last week, Mr. J. H. Stirk, M.Inst.T., Chairman of the Traffic Commissioners, who presided, said there were now 92 on the staff, as against eight in January, 1931.
He said that the department received a large number of anonymous letters calling attention to misdemeanours and breachei of the 'regUlations. It had to investigate them, and usually found that there was some meat in them.
Mr. Stirk .complimented Mr. Ferrier Brown on his excellent team and on the tremendous improvement, in road vehicles, observing that 5,000 had been taken off the road since 1934.
Wider Steamers Dangerous?
The County Councils Association, it is reported, views with great misgiving the proposal to allow 3 ins. extra in the overall width Of steam vehicles. The Association considers that the proposal should be rejected by the Minister of Transport.
