• A report into the transport of animals has called for better training for livestock hauliers. The study also recommends that four-decked animal trailers should be banned and that all multi-tier vehicles should be equipped with hydraulically operated floors.
Birmingham City Council's senior animal welfare officer Graham Taylor looked at livestock transport in six EC countries: the UK, Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands and Germany. His report, The Transport of Livestock by Road, found that the quality of animal transport vehicles in the UK is generally superior to other EC countries.
But Taylor recommends a number of improvements and says that a recognised training programme should be introduced for all livestock hauliers.
The report is now being studied by the British Veterinary Association, the Ministry of Agriculture and animal welfare groups.
El A training scheme for livestock hauliers will begin next month. The Handling and Loading of Livestock Scheme will carry certification from the National Proficiency Test Council.
