• An embarrassed RAC has pleaded guilty to running one of its transporter vehicles without the required goods vehicle test certificate.
The organisation came before magistrates on 12 May in Bury, Lancashire, after the Mercedes 814 was found to be running without the goods vehicle equivalent of an MoT. The organisation was fined a total of £200 on three charges of having no goods vehicle certificate, no plating certificate and no Ministry plates. It also had to pay the costs of the Crown Prosecution Service.
An RAC spokesman says that it was unclear whether a goods vehicle certificate was required for the transporter
vehicle involved. A total of five vehicles in the RAC fleet were running without certificates, although all are now running legally. He adds: "We were following an industry handbook and there does seem to be an ambiguity in the law. Obviously we have rectified the situation now, but others in the industry should perhaps take note."
