• A "long-term" contract, for transfer station operation, transport and disposal of 150,000 tonnes of waste a year at the London Borough of Bromley from 1997 is due to be announced by the borough soon. No more tenders are being accepted.
And contracts to haul up to 500,000 tonnes of household waste a year for five South London boroughs were recently divided between A&J Bull and Cleanaway.
Mitcham, Surrey-based A&J Bull, which has a turnover of £20m, has won contracts worth ,C40m over 15 years to transport waste from transfer stations to landfill sites for Sutton, Merton and Kingston boroughs.
The Merton contract was divided: the bulk refuse haulage of 50,000 tonnes a year was awarded to Bull and 30,000 tonnes of civic amenity waste transport went to Drinkwater Sabey.
In Croydon, Cleanaway's contract includes adaptation of a waste transfer station to raise compactor machines so that they can pack waste directly on to a trailermounted system. This allows containerised 20tonne loads to be carried: previously 12-tonne ISO containers were used when Greenways handled the annual 150,000 tonnes of Croydon waste transport from the transfer station.
