THE 110 drivers who have qualified in 12 regional eliminating contests to take part in the final round of the Lorry Driver of the Year competition will meet on Sunday at Gamecock Barracks, Bramcote, near Nuneaton.
During the morning and early afternoon, the 10 class championships will be decided, the competitors driving their own vehicles. Later, the class champions will compete against each other for the premier award, this time driving vehicles provided by the organizers.
Tests are as follows:— Teat 1.—Width Judging: Start on line AA: indicate minimum gap through which vehicle can pass at BB and CC. Drive forward to stop astride line YY. Reverse on same course through similar gaps at DD and EE to stop astride linc AA. Test 2.—Kerb parking: start on line AA and ' park between obstacles at BB (spaced at lt times overall length). Forward, reverse and forward moves only.
Test 3.—Posirioning: Start on AR. drive forward to stop with rearmost wheels (offand near-side)
between lines CC and DD. Reverse to stop with rearmost off-side wheel or wheels between kerb BC and line XX. Drive forward to stop with foremost near-side wheel between kerb AC and line YY. Finally, drive forward to Stop with foremost wheels, nearand off-side. between tines CC and DD.
Ted 4.—Loading-bay reversing: Start on line AA. Drive forward to stop astride line BB. Reverse through opening CC into bay parallel to herb AB without touching barrier DD.
broadly similar to those used in the 1958 contest, but the fourth is slightly less complicated, there being only one " loading bay," instead of two.
Penalties common to all the tests include 100 marks for failure to complete the test correctly, 40 marks for mounting or displacing kerbs, and 20 marks for touching obstructions. All the tests are timed, Tests one, two and three are
