AFTER almost two years of operation a private bus service, paid for by the Greater London Council, will cease in the autumn when construction is completed of the Ripple Road flyover in Barking.
The unique half-hourly shuttle service, operated by Lacey's (East Ham), with the agreement of LT, links the Harrow public house area and Barking Town centre which was served by LT route no. 87 until the level crossing replacement programme required the service to be re-routed. These major road-works would have isolated several hundred homes, causing inconvenience and hardship.
It was the first time that the GLC used private hire transport to fill a gap left by the withdrawal of an LT facility.
