DISCUSSIONS are taking place on the most suitable site for a road/rail freight interchange for Greater Manchester.
Greater Manchester County Council favours a site in the Salford Docks Enterprise Zone, while Trafford Park Industrial Council believes the project would be better in Trafford Park itself. Both sites are owned by British Rail.
More than 20 interchanges nationally have been proposed as part of a joint initiative by British Rail and the Association of Metropolitan Authorities.
Trafford Park Industrial Council says traffic associated with a road/rail interchange in Trafford Park would be better isolated from neighbouring town centres and residentiial areas than would traffic using the suggested Salford site which was intended for manufacturing.
The county council believes the benefits of siting the interchange in the Enterprise Zone would be a distinct advantage in helping to nurse the development through its stages and would have financial benefits associated with the zone.
