A UNION HAS won the right to official recognition within a Yorkshire-based logistics company despite recruiting less than half the workforce as members.
The Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) says drivers and their mates at JDF Logistics should be represented separately by the United Road Transport Union after the rest of the 100strong workforce showed little interest in joining.
JDF argued that because there was little difference in pay and conditions across the workforce, dealing with drivers and their mates separately would be divisive.
However, Roy Abrahams, URTU divisional officer, says: "Part of our argument was that warehouse staff are on a different pay structure and are not subject to drivers' hours regulations. It was a completely different set of terms and conditions.
"We were also able to say that drivers were managed separately from the warehouse staff."
URTU and Barnsley-based JDF will now attempt to draw up a recognition agreement.
• URTU is currently negotiating a new pay deal with Cheshire-based James lrlam & Sons where it won official recognition in September 2901.
Last year, the company sidestepped pay negotiations by imposing a rise that was actually higher than the one offered to the onion.
