According to the Department for Transport's (DfT) Road Casualties Great Britain 2006 report, there were 11,336 HGV accidents in 2006, 458 of which were fatal. Two years on, it would be fair to assume this number may have increased. With factors such as more foreign commercial vehicles on the roads, and drivers feeling the pressure of rocketing fuel prices by working intensely long hours (CM 10 July 'Truck driving is second most sleepdeprived profession'), there is now more reasons for operators to be prepared for those worst-case scenarios.
