The right tyre combination can represent a significant fuel and weight saving for CVs — but it's imperative to make sure they are properly maintained and monitored.
A major name returning to the show is Continental Tyres, which will be showing new truck and van tyres. They are a combination of new and retread products that are said to offer weight savings and fuel savings. There's also news of sponsorship associated with the forthcoming Euro 2008 soccer tournament.
Bridgestone will be presenting its latest generation of tyres, including the M749 highway drive-axle tyre. These have been designed, according to Bridgestone, to improve cost efficiency and minimise rolling resistance.
Michelin will display two new products on its stand, with new trailer and front-axle steering tyres.
The One MaxiTrailer is a 455/45R22.5, which has a 400m elastic steel cord wrapped around the crown of the tyre to maintain even wear and strength, says the company.
The Energy XF is a 315/60R22.5 front-axle steering tyre designed to handle a 7.5-tonne load. It's aimed at car transporters, where front axle load is always high. The extra 400kg capacity, over a standard front-axle 7.1-tonne tyre is said to be combined with a 5% improvement in grip.
Truckfile has constructed a tyre wear mat that allows drivers to check the condition of a truck's tyres by driving over it. The Tyrecheck has a sensor fitted to the mat that registers changes in the magnetic field. It turns these readings into tyre depth measurements and gives a picture of the tyres' condition, uneven wear, and tread depth. Tyres are fitted with tags so that each one has a unique number that links the data to the truck.
