CONVERTED six-wheeler built by the Primrose Third Axle Co. Ltd., Ewood, Blackburn, for Unilever Ltd., to be used for a special project, is based on a BMC FJ K100 5-ton chassis. It is equipped with 17 in. wheels and provides a low-loading frame for the carriage of containers. The chassis is fitted with a BMC 5.7-litre diesel engine to afford ample power for a maximum gross load of 15 tons. The open framework is designed to receive a 17 ft. container, the forward end of which is located 3 ft. behind the cab.
Whilst the wheelbase' of the vehicle is 13 ft. 8.5 in., the distance from the back of the cab to the end of the frame is 19 ft. 3 in. When fully laden the height of the top of the frame is 32.5 in., and the platform height is 40 in. The four-spring rear bogie is of standard Primrose type and features offset balance beam which increases proportion of the load carried by the drivi axle. An air-pressure load-transfer cylinc can be used further to increase the load the event of traction difficulties.
The standard tandem air-hydraulic NIA pack of the foot-brake system operates t front and rear axles, which triggers anott air-hydraulic pack of the dual-diaphra type to apply the brakes of the driving axle. separate hand control in the cab actuates t second diaphragm of this pack and al the diaphragm that is used to assist t handbrake. This is applied to the rearm( axle.
