• Bristol tipper operators could expect a bonanza if a local plant hire firm wins planning permission to level a former colliery.
T Smart (Plant Hire) will be seeking 20-30 local lorries and drivers to move 450,000 tonnes of shale from a disused tip at Pensford.
Up to 90 vehicles a day will be used on the operation which could last 18 months to three years. Most of the waste material will be used for infilling for the approach roads of the second Severn Crossing if the scheme gets the go-ahead.
"The Pensford site has been abused for years by fly tipping," says Tom Smart. "We will clear the site, add topsoil and then landscape it by planting 5,000 trees to create a nature conservancy area."
Avon County Council will con sider the earth-moving application at a meeting in October. "The Government and Friends of the Earth are backing the use of secondary materials over the use of quarry stone for roads," adds Smart. "This will be the thing of the future."
