HAULAGE BOSSES IN the North-East are concerned that the scheme to dual the Al north from Morpeth to the Scottish border could slip even further down the list of roadbuilding priorities, following the government's recent decision to ask transport consultancy Aecom to investigate the economic benefits of the 40-mile, -£400m project.
Robin Ramage, operations director at Ramage Transport, based in Newcatle-upon-Tyne, says: The road needs to remain at the forefront of government
thinking It is the only major route to Edinburgh [for us] and other important centres in the east of Scotland, such as Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness."
Alan Ferguson, MD at Cramlington, Northumberland-based Fergusons Transport, also believes the Al road widening project is "long overdue".
He adds: The money spent would bring not only the short-term benefits during construction that are badly needed now, but also deliver long-term benefits for decades to come."
