• Volvo plans to launch a rearengined single-deck citybus chassis at next month's Geneva Show, with right-hand-drive versions available for UK operators by mid-summer.
In the UK, the Volvo-engined urn and 12m chassis will replace the Leyland Lynx which is
being dropped as Volvo closes its Workington bus plant in Cumbria (CM 12-18 Dec). Plans announced in 1990 to offer the Lynx underframe to other bodybuilders have now been dropped and the last Lynx, with steelframed Leyland body, will be built before the end of this month. Only 95 Lynx have been built at Workington this year, where bodybuilding was losing Volvo ELlm a year.
Volvo has also ended months of speculation by confirming it is dropping the Leyland Tiger heavy-duty coach and the Swift mid-engined midibus. The only Leyland product — and the only Volvo bus offered with a Cummins or Gardner engine — to be built when bus chassis production moves to Irvine in August will be the Olympian double-decker. And Um has been earmarked for its forward development.
First UK deliveries of the new B6R midibus, including the first 50 of 200 ordered by Stagecoach Holdings, will come from the Steyr Bus plant in Vienna, before UK production starts.
Production of the other UKbuilt Volvo, the best-selling BlOM coach, moves back to Boras in Sweden when Workington closes, but is expected to move to Irvine by 1993.
