for a steel piston ring of the laminated type, called the Trancosteel interlocking ring. They are supported by the experience of a prominent operator, whilst a study of the construction of the ring also corroborates them.
Each ring comprises , four manganese-steel units, 1-32 in. thick, and dished, so ...that when they are arranged in packs, with the direction of dishing opposite in alternate units, the whole possesses axial resilience. Accordingly, when fitted inta a
groove, a good joint is made with both faces. Furthermore, there is also , radial spring, so that a continual seal is preserved in a worn cylinder. Pro
vision is made for maintaining the gap spacing of adjoining ring units at 180 degrees.
Trancosteel interlocking rings are made by the Farnborough Engineering Co , Ltd., Farnborough, Kent, and are claimed to reduce oil and petrol consumption and to improve power. Tests carried out by Bournemouth Corporation Transport Services with an A.E.C. engine, in which two of these rings were fitted to each piston ' at a time in the life of the' vehicle when the bore wear was 0.01 in. and the oil consumption 360 m.p.g., revealed the following facts: that consumption fell to 2,000 m.p.g., rising, after 14,000 miles, to 1,700 m.p.g.
and, after 19,000 miles, to only 1,200 m.p.g., and that wear had increased, after 14,000 miles, from 0.01 to 0.0105 in.
When labour, machinery, fuel .and lubricant are all in short supply, yet transport must be maintained at the highest possible pitch of efficiency, any means for curing mechanical ailments without expensive overhauling, constitute a contribution to the war effort.
These piston rings are available in numerous standard oversizes, from basic diameters of 75 mm. upwards,'
costing from 9d. each. The service distributor is Edmunds. Walker and Co., Ltd., 114, The Broadway, West Hendon, London, N.W.9.
