VMUs (vehicle maintenance units) and subcontracted facilities to keep its vehicles up to scratch, although a large proportion of the 1.500-strong, mixed fleet of vehicles is under someform of contract maintenance package. Carefully defined procedures govern the quality of service carried out by its own VMUs and this forms the backbone of a quality standard for subcontractor facilities. Each subcontractor is vetted and audited and expected to sign up to TDG's quality standards. Regional engineers audit both the TDG workshops and those managed by subcontractors. The audit covers all aspects of maintenance, inspections, record keeping and controls in protection of the operator's licence. An inspection of a random selection of trucks and trailers is part of the procedure. TDG benchmarks Its maintenance standards against the best in the industry as a whole, so it uses the support of the FTAS inspection service.
