• Local authority transport spending—primarily on road maintenance—is 2900m below the proper level: 83% of councils say they need to spend more on servicing roads than they did last year.
These findings of a survey of 95 transport providers, including 80 local authorities, were published last week by the Institution of Civil Engineers. Public transport is seen as the sector most in need of development with 63% of respondents expecting traffic congestion to increase in the next 12 months.
Total expenditure on transport schemes by local authorities is 21.8bn (38%) short of the estimated 24.7bn that needs to be spent on the UK's infrastructure every year. Local authorities are most positive about investment in new road schemes in Wales and Scotland (see above): London is seen as the greatest problem area.
