NEw proposals for village bus services have been made by the Central Transport Consultative Committee. They have asked the Minister of Transport to revise some of the present restrictions on the use of 12-seat vehicles so that small operators can offer services to villages.
The committee secretary, Mr. J. C. Chambers, said last week: "We want to encourage the small village service to be run by local people to places where larger companies could not run them economically. The sort of service we have in mind is one which takes village people to the local market once a week."
He . pointed out that at present the specifications for 12-seaters were too severe to bring them within the scope of the small operator. These included special safety devices, such as two or three exits.
[Operators' opposition to 12-seaters for use in rural areas was reported in The Commercial Motor dated June 7.]
