THE LARGEST construction company in the UK, George Wimpey Ltd, is convinced that a twin tunnel across the channel makes far better economic sense than a single bore.
Addressing the House of Commons Transport Committee's Channel Link inquiry. the company said the development would need Government support in some form despite Transport Minister. Norman Fowler's warning that no Government money would be forthcoming.
Wimpey and its partner, Volker Stevin, see the advantages of the submerged tube
proposal outweighing the disadvantages — which include obstruction to shipping during construction and the need for further sea bed investigation.
The advantages, they say, include no restrictions on access between running and service tunnels, less vulnerability in construction to unexpected ground conditions and the 'technological spin-off''.
