THE acquisition of a new Gloster Saro Javelin firecrash tender contributed in uprating Cardiff Wales Airport to category eight status allowing movements of aircraft up to B747 size.
Power and speed for the 6x6 28-ton gvw Reynolds Boughton-chassied Javelin was developed jointly with Gloster Sam o to give an acceleration performance of 0 to 50 mph in less than 40 seconds while carrying a full payload including 10,000 litres (2200 gal) of water together with 1200 litres (264 gal) of foam.
A very low centre of gravity has been achieved by combining the pto, gearbox and transfer box and mounting within the wheelbase_
