JVHILE the EEC debates the viability of wider vehicles, Swedish transport interests, including the TFK Transport Research Group and the hauliers' association, are now pressing for an increase of vehicle width to 2.6m (8ft 63/8in).
It is claimed that the extra ten centimetres in width over existing dimensions would result in improved operating economies and energy savings.
The ability to carry two 80cm x 120cm pallets side by side and the greater opportunities for improved designs of refrigerated bodies for pallet loading are other factors in favour of increased width.
Loading and unloading times could be reduced by an average of ten per cent and annual savings in the Swedish road transport industry would be considerable. There is also the additional benefit of safer working conditions because of greater clearances.
